VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE, IN “LA PAZ”

Spring time is the time of variety in the waters off the coast line of La Paz. Each day a fisherman never knows what may await their bait or jig offering. These past three weeks have been a roller coaster of ups and downs. The “ups” being the variety of big fish and the “downs” may be a couple of days of windy weather. Normal weather patterns have returned with a mild breeze in the morning and calm water after about 9am. (Photo of Walter Phillips above and right)

It is “Spring Time”, and the waters off La Paz are coming to life more and more each day. On any day you might see large schools of bait being chased by Dolphins, large schools of False Tuna or Bonita. Several times in the past weeks I’ve seen large pods of “Mobula” Rays twisting, back flipping gliding and yes, flying their way across the waters.

The local commercial fisherman are still delivering good numbers of Yellowtail to the market place, but most of the sport fishing fleets in the area have given up on the big green backs and are fishing closer to the islands. My suspicion is, that a live mackerel fished a little deeper will still do the trick.

Steve Killingsworth of Rexburgh, Idaho enjoyed the variety experience with notable catches of a 30 pound Jack Crevalle, a 30+ pound Rooster Fish and then topped it off with a big 40 pound class “Bull” Dorado. Joining in the fishing excitement was Levi Lundholm, from Island Park, Idaho. Levi contributed with his catch of a 40 pound Rooster Fish as well. (Photo left and below)

A member of the Brian Parker group, Paul Indelicato from Danville, California landed a “30ish” Jack Crevalle on light tackle spinning gear. I’m told it was the last cast of the day with the last piece of bait. Sometimes it’s just your time to shine. Congratulations!!

John Byal of Hayward, California experienced some top notch, world class relaxation and a good variety of fishing during his stay with Baja Pirates. John caught False Tuna, Snapper, Bonito, Grouper, Fine Scaled Trigger Fish, Red Cardinal Fish and a nice Mexican Hog Fish. He also experience some great dinning, having his catch of Yellow Snapper expertly prepared by the Dingy Dock Restaurant staff.

John Robert from Highland, California experienced some great inshore fishing for Pargo and Cabrilla, with a nice 25 pound Cabrilla adding to his bag of fish. John is seen hear with two examples of some very nice Cabrilla. Way to go "Big John"! (Photo above and right.)

Big Cabrilla was the norm around the islands these past three weeks with a nice catch by Rich Harrington from Tucson Arizona. Brother Bob Harrington certainly didn’t want to be out done. Bob Harrington from Scottsdale, Arizona proudly displayed his monster of a Barred Pargo at dock side the following day. This big boy was estimated at 40 pounds, taken on a sardine slow trolled along the rocks off the islands. (Photo of Bob to the left and Rich just below)

The Fine Scaled Trigger Fish are biting well and makes a great contribution to the mixed bag of rock fish. They are a strong fighter when hooked and give a ferocious bite, either to the bait or to a fisherman’s finger so beware. These fish make an excellent ceviche, and can be expertly prepared by the restaurant staff. The experience is completed with healthy portions of fresh tortilla chips, salsa, guacamole and your favorite beverage.

Russell Sime and Richard McPherson of Blue Mule Outfitters, Phoenix Arizona, visited one day this month. We spent most of our time looking for Rooster Fish but couldn’t seem to locate them. Richard kept his fly wet and landed several Bonito. We took a break and did some rock fishing and Russel was kept busy with a pocket of Flag Cabrilla. Great eating and a very beautiful fish.

Joe Orlando and his group from San Francisco, California sent us some great shots from their trip that was just last week. They found some very big Cabrilla, Dog Tooth Snapper, Pargo and rumor has it some Amber Jack. These are excellent specimens and great photos. Thanks for sharing your trip with us and we look forward to hosting you and your group again. On the whipping stick side of things, I spent a day exploring with my fly rod. I didn’t find the Rooster Fish, but did land for the day two Green Jacks, two Yellow Snapper, one nice Cabrilla, two small Pargo, one Taxi Trigger and several Bonito. (Photo left and below)

As I look into the future I see the water getting warmer, better Rooster fishing, the Dorado arrival in full force, and the Bill Fish that we are starting to see now take offered baits.

So if your feeling the need to "spice" things up a bit with some spring fishing variety give the office a call.

Saludos, Walter
